LONGFELLOW, Henry W.  The Complete Poetical Works of Henry W. Longfellow : with prefatory notice : six engravings on steel.  Edinburgh; London: Gall & Inglis, n.d. [1865?].  Hbk.  xx, 700p : illus (b & w).

There is no date on the title page, but the prefatory notice is dated 1865.  Clothbound in red  blocked with design in cream, gold and black on front and gold and black on spine; the design on back is plain embossed.  The page edges are gilded.  The cover is a little bumped and rubbed, particularly on the spine.  The spine is a little faded and there is staining on all parts of the cover, but not to a degree which significantly detracts from the attractiveness of the design.  The binding is sound.  There is light browning and there is foxing on the first and last few pages as well as foxing on a small proportion of the remaining pages.  The names of two former owners are inscribed on the flyleaf.  Judging from the style and ink, one of these P.J. Rooney, was probably the original owner. The text is clear and unmarked.  All in all, considering its age, I would describe this book’s condition as very good. STRONG, L A G.  Trevannion.  1st edition.  London: Methuen, 1948.  341p.  Hbk., with dustjacket.

A charming novel in a fictional English setting described as a remnant of the late Victoria era.  The dustjacket was designed by Edward Ardizzone. The dustjacket is torn along the bottom edge and the top of the spine and is a little stained, but Ardizzone’s front design is largely untouched.  The dark blue cloth binding is slightly worn on the top of the back hinge and the top and bottom of the spine is a little bumped; there is also a slight, dark stain on the front top edge.  However, the binding is basically sound.  There is some light browning on the endpapers and edges, but the text is clear and unmarked.  A good copy.  See photos 1  and  2.  Contact us about this book.

Stock no: 116.  Price: £9.00, plus £2.90 postage and packaging.
